How Can I Fix Badly Worn Wooden Floors?

I live in a rental in which the wooden floors in high traffic areas are worn to bare wood. Is there anything I can buy or use to fix this and give them durability again (short of commercially sanding down the entire floor)? I’ve looked at a lot of products at Home Depot, Lowes, and Walmart. All say not to use on bare wood or badly worn wood floors. Ideas? The color of the wood is medium brown – darker than honey, but not by much.

Option #1:

First get your Landlord’s permission. You’re talking about an improvement, but Landlords can be funny about any changes.

If he OKs it…

Rent a floor sander from Home Depot or Lowes.

Thoroughly sand the floor. Vacuum and clean it afterward and allow it to dry.

Then stain it and seal it.

To stain…use a mop or a paint roller to apply the stain and wipe it off with rags. (Throw the rags away after using…if you keep them, they can be a fire hazard.) To reach into corners, use a paint brush.

After the floor is stained, seal it with varnish or polyurethane. Keep all windows open and fans running for ventilation.

Wear a mask for all parts of this procedure.

Your floor should look brand new when you’re done.

Option #2:

There are products made specifically to restore finishes to wood. I believe one such product is called “Restore A Finish”.

You can buy these products at hardware stores and home improvement stores.

Apply with a rag and polish.

This would improve the high traffic areas tremendously.

You would not get a complete make-over using this option, but it would be a lot easier and would look a lot better, too.

Plus, you wouldn’t need your Landlord’s permission to do this.
