How do I prevent my chest in Pine Wood prints of swelling in water in it?

Wood is an organic material, and all the wood to absorb moisture from the atmosphere (and dry again.) No matter if the wood is painted or varnished, will still to some extent. It will be more dramatic if the timber has not been well seasoned before it is used to build something, but there is nothing you can do but try to keep the atmosphere in the room as consistent possible, use a humidifier in the winter to keep the wood dry, so it developed cracks.
