What type of subfloor do I have?
I live in a second floor condo in California built in 2004. I want to install Engineered Wood and want to know what type of subfloor I have. I pulled up the carpet and the subfloor seems to be a brittle dirty white stuff like concrete, but not nearly so solid. Is this just an extra layer placed over the wood subfloor or is it a concrete subfloor? Thanks!
Can I nail into it to install an engineered wood floor or do I have to glue it down?
It sounds like you are seeing a cementitious leveling material over a flexicore base. You would not see this over plywood. If it was a plywood subfloor, it would be what you would see when you lifted the carpet up.
So it sounds like you can’t use nails.
